So after my post the other day on customising early 20th C half dolls, I’ve completed two more and another two on the way. And I bought a bunch more. BWHAHAHAHAHAA.
I call them complete when I have glued a bit of felt to their bottom and given them two coats of varnish.
I have also figured out to give them a coat of Mr Superclear before the sealant, as if I go straight for the (water based wood) varnish, it tends to lift and muddy the paint I’ve just put down.
I’ve tried very much to not introduce any new colours into a doll’s new cephalopod or monster bottom half, I am mixing acrylics to colour match as closely as possible (or as closely as I can be bothered) her top half.
Actually the really cool thing is the colours all seems to be pretty similar. I suspect most of them were made in the same factories in japan and they just splashed on the same glazes. So once I’ve mixed a colour in a sealable container, I can reuse it.

I was considering trying to sell these but I think they are sweet and I’d like to have them out on display to enjoy them myself. I love the half dolls – the art deco-ness of them is just adorable.
I admit I find myself wondering what else I can customise, given this works really well and it’s FUN. If only op shops were open.
