I have a friend who is a fan of the metal band, Black Alpine. She saw my post of the ink paintings I did of the Steve Wilson concert and asked if I’d do a commission for her.
My friend Abby, which whom I’ve had a long exchange of items with (including a pair of New Rock Boots and a frozen, much mourned dead snake), saw my concert paintings and asked if I’d be willing to do a commission for a band she was into. I said yes because these are fun to do. The band, Black Alpine, is from New Zealand and are classic metal. I had a bit of a listen for inspiration.

I was really happy with these (in fact I prefer them to the finished piece in a way). I had purchased a large piece of watercolour paper, had to find a bit of board for my easel that was big enough to tape it to, and got going with it. And voila! BLACK ALPINE! Frantic Metal Energy! \m/ I am fond of a bit of metal, I like a bit of Classic Old School Metal, like Iron Maiden and Metallica (including St Anger, but not of course Load/Reload, I’m not a total numpty). I prefer my metal to be Lyrical Prog Metal; Opeth, Anathema, that ilk. I admit to seeing Marilyn Manson in concert too (Shock Rock Metal). Oh the metal genera you’ll find if you go looking…like Pirate Metal, or Finnish Troll Metal (turns out it wasn’t just Lordi). If you do want to explore the types of metal, go get yourself a copy of the “Metal Evolution” series by Sam Dunn. Any muso should watch it – it’s done with humor and passion and an incredible eye for detail. And the 80’s hair metal episode is SUCH a good episode. All in all this was a rewarding thing to do…. I need to do more ink. It’s messy. I’m not a neat painter. I ended up with ink all over myself, my phone, and my glasses.Related
