I’ve just finished a two month stint working at Docklands. Now, I know I said i would NEVER WORK THERE AGAIN after my 2006 stint. Clearly I cannot be trusted. This time though it’s for real. Never. Again. There is nothing to do, you’re isolated, cold, and bored.
The ONE thing docklands has on offer is how pretty it is. You think WOW THIS IS PRETTY as you chase your hat because the insane wind that is 100% of the time present, whips it off your head, and you think GOSH WHAT A NICE VIEW as you huddle into your coat because it also appears to be in Antarctica, and you think OH THE MODERN WHACKY BUILDINGS ARE SO INTERESTING as you go in search of good coffee (but you don’t find any, in fact, there are no shops because it’s Docklands and it’s a bit troubled and businesses don’t last there).
Why did I think it would be ok to work there during winter? Must have been insane.
In 2006 I went for a walk one day with a camera and took pics and I did the same this time round. I got a lot of shots from similar locations. So I bring to you my comparison shots.
2006 I keep forgetting what colour my hair used to be. It was winter, i was in my 1940s coat
2018 still taking photos of myself in reflection, still in the same coat. In a liftwell, locked out as my pass expired before my contract did.
2006 bolte bridge. you get some seriously pretty reflections
2018 Bolte. Nothing changed there! Morning sun was on it.
Views of Victoria Harbour:
2006 Sculpture that is no longer there
2006 view from my tea rooms. Cow in a tree. Now has a cafe in front of it. 1010 Latrobe being built in the background, lack of other buildings along harbour.
2018 looking over to 1010 latrobe, now has channel seven, plus trees along the path. There are not enough businesses around that bit of docklands to justify more than a few small cafes.
2006 victoria harbour, lots of things being built
2006 Victoria harbour had way less buildings
2018 victoria harbour now apartments all along it. Probably the saddest, loneliest place to try to go for a walk to find something to do at lunchtime.
2018 view from just outside nab over to vic harbour
2018 It looks cold because it is cold
2006 Nab reflections
2006 Back when the Erriccson building didnt exist nor did bourke st
2018 Nab. Dammit i didn’t get a good shot overlooking all the buildings next to it. i took this photo and sent it to someone i’d worked with there.
2006 Woah. there were trees? crazy.
2018 View from tea rooms overlooking where those trees used to be but are no more
2006 bunny with twisty statue in the background
2018 I plumb forgot about the bunny till i went for a walk and there it was. BUNNEH! trees a bit bigger.
2018 twisty sculpture still there. still in a wind tunnel.
2006 looking towards Bourke, back when 800 NAB was the only completed building on that bit of Bourke St . Now it’s an actual street. I’m standing in a park that is now either buildings or road.
2006 Bourke st overpass, now this is now buildt right up
And now for a bunch of nice pics from recent walk
2018 Really amazing sunrise on my second day, looking up latrobe
2018 looking back towards city from bourke st overpass, another view of sunrise
2018 on Latrobe st bridge looking over stabled trains just outside Southern cross
2018 how can you not be impressed at how pretty it is. looking back over at city
2018 balloons, looking towards north melbourne from Bourke overpass
2018 nope. No idea. On Latrobe st.
2018 view onto the tops of trams, how different in size are they? W6 city circle and I think that is a B class
2018 looking over what is now collins st but used to be parkland
2018 My workplace for 2 months.Same building as borderforce.
Maybe in another 12 years I’ll think ‘oh how bad can it be’ and go back again to work there and then take more photos and whinge like I have in this post.
