I missed two classes, one due to illness and one due to workshops that I could only go to on a Monday – So I attended again today. We had a model, a woman of I would say mid-20s. Also an artist. She has a really sweet face, I decided to work on a likeness rather than a body pose.
Each sitting was, as usual, 20 mins in total. Then everyone gets a break and wanders around and then you go back in. I find the first two or three disheartening. Then there is a sweet spot where the painting clicks over and you start to just flow with it.
I had trouble over the face shape and eye placement early on. also using light purple on her face helped it all to pop a bit.
Once I started on the dynamic range and reflected light it really started taking shape. And our tutor, Barbe, comes over and suggests things one has missed and then you correct them.
Painting in Pastels means corrections are fairly easy. I’m starting to really get a hang of the medium. I will be interested when I’m done with this course, how that translates to how I work in them in the future.
And done! The class is 10-12.30 and it’s frankly long enough for me to be standing and working. I have a bad back after all! In this last bit I corrected her eyes, and added greens to cool down reflections, darkened the darks, changed the nose a bit, thinned down the face that i’d done too wide She had a great curve to her lip and a strong nose. Today was a pleasure to draw. Next week still life again! Maybe I will take in a handful of chilies….
