Yo! I have completed my second pastel session. The first is here. We had the same model and the same pose, but yesterday I chose to do him from a different angle and only do his face. I also started the picture differenlty by laying in broad strokes the way the tutor showed us to do, which is different for me.
We had 20 mins on 10 mins off, for a total of about 2.5 hours.
Remember last week I sketched in all the lights and darks first which was a mistake as I got proportions wrong and I was struggling to correct them a lot.
Adding in darks, making the eye socket look right. fixing the hat.
Tutor reminded us of importance of putting background colour in early to get values right
details of face and ear, more details
I struggled with the ear and also made the bridge of the nose too light. It was the lightest bit on his face. You can see the constant build up all over the picture, and i used the same colours just in different amounts all over the picture too.
finalising colour and highlights
got it home and realised the right of the chin looked odd, fixed it by darkening it
This is the first time I’ve successfully done a proper portrait from a sitting model. It was fun. I need to do more of this. Not easy though! All that work in oils, painting portraits has really paid off as I know how to shape a face and what to expect when drawing a face. This course is mostly about learning the medium and also learning how to paint fast from life.
I think my picture this week blows my last week’s one out of the water (see below), which took the same amount of time. The scale is different, the paper size is the same. But also the approach in starting and doing the picture was different. Looking forward to seeing what comes next.
