After getting a new camp bed (this time with no puncturs!) we ended up camping at at Barmah, which is an utterly beautiful section of the Murray River, as you can see. Nothing better than having a camp ground all to yourselves, with a tent that opens directly onto a view looking over the river. Because it’s a national park too, the Bogans on the jetskis are not in this bit of the Murray and so the relaxing sound of the two stroke engine destroying habitat cannot be heard in this bit of the park.
We were there in a time of total fire ban – which means you can use a camp stove if you’ve got water to douse out setting yourself alight (I actually set fire to myself about 3 years ago while camping so actually it’s not that dumb an idea). A dude turned up with his parents-in-law to watch the sunset and have a cup of tea, he was intending to make a fire but worked out he couldn’t. We lent him our stove and gas bottle, he was very grateful and gave us chocolate (I don’t eat chocolate but it was a nice gesture of thanks). As you can see the sunset was pretty darn glorious.
Bliss. Lots of nice water, lots of River Red Gums, and we even saw Brumbies on the way in. I was not expecting to be watched by a bunch of horses, I must be honest. River Red gums are wonderful trees. I really loved this park, will go back again some day.
