About Me – Artist’s Statement

My name is Avril E Jean, I am an artist living in Melbourne, Australia. I am primarily now an Australian Landscape artist who  meanders around doing many different projects in art and craft.

I paint in oils or water colours or pastels, depending on where whim takes me.  I like to try new things, like egg tempera, or coloured pencil.

Sometimes, instead, I make sock monkeys, or I practice my bass guitar. I also write stories, poetry, and blog. I sew, work with wood, garden, exercise, I keep chickens and tropical fish, I have a lizard called Rosetti and a tortoise called Andy.  I am under the command of a number of cats who don’t exploit me at all (I begin to suspect I am a crazy cat lady).

I am interested in exploring many topics – society and feminism in particular.  I have a degree in biology, which remains a very strong interest for me but I’ve never worked in science.  I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder a few years ago which made a lot of things make a bit more sense, I spend a fair bit of time managing the issues that arise from that.

I have worked many years in IT as a Business Analyst but mostly as a Software Tester, my current role in test support, looking for ways to supporting and working on improvements for testing in my company. Much of my inspiration for my figurative pictures come from working in a project team.

Sometimes when the mood takes me I take my small, horrid, JustinBieberDoll out for a walk and we get a new post for his website, which he demands that I maintain on his behalf.

And feel free to like me on facebook: Avril E Jean, Artist

As A.E.Jean I sometimes contribute book reviews to Melbourne Review of Books

Hi Avril ! I just wanted to say that your post on dealing with ADD hit me right at home. I’m currently a 20 year old Interior Design student (but my number 1 passion is creating oil paintings). I always thought I had a few screws loose, but I never knew what it was. It wasn’t until this past year that I realized I was suffering from it ADD. I have to doodle to stay awake in all of my classes, I’m always the only one who seems to misinterpret or struggle to get started on my assignments. I love pretty much anything action-oriented, especially anything that involves creating ( cooking, sewing, drawing, etc.). My point is that reading your post made me smile because I realized I’m not the only artist who has severe mental struggles. You should continue to write, your words are very inspirational =] .
